Yahoo Joins OpenSocial, Google Announces OpenSocial Foundation
Today Yahoo announced that they are joining forces with the OpenSocial platform, and will be joining both Google and MySpace to build “The OpenSocial Foundation”. This new foundation “will seek to ensure that the technology behind OpenSocial remains implementable by all, freely and without restriction, in perpetuity.” It is modeled after the current industry-supported OpenID foundation. As an addition to that announcement, Google has released “opensocial.org” to promote the development of OpenSocial on a standard platform away from the Google environment.
I expect to see greater support from Yahoo out of this, especially out of their YUI environment. As a big YUI user and supporter myself, I would love to see OpenSocial tie-ins to the already existing AJAX frameworks they already provide. Add to that the already existing Upcoming.org, Flickr.com, and MyBlogLog networks, Yahoo brings to the table the potential for one of the largest networks of users yet in the OpenSocial platform. Yahoo’s participation in this effort will no doubt solidify that OpenSocial is a standard to build upon. It goes to question whether Facebook will ever give into the pressure to join as well.
Are you an OpenSocial developer on the West Coast? Be sure to join us in our first ever West Coast OpenSocial Hackathon tomorrow night, 7pm to 12am PST. RSVP via upcoming here.
